Founded in 1996, Preferred IPA of California has a tradition of providing quality service to its participating physicians and their patients. Preferred IPA has grown into one of Southern California’s largest managed care networks – contracting with more than 1,000 physicians and managing delivery of health care to over 200,000 members throughout Los Angeles County.

Preferred IPA’s key to success is the stability of its long-standing leadership who individually have over 20 years of managed care experience that has developed a successful process to administer shared and full risk arrangements with a variety of health plans and hospitals.

Preferred IPA has sustained steady growth and success since its inception by establishing a knowledgeable foundation and being notably recognized within the physician, hospital, and health plan communities. Preferred IPA has always been in full compliance with health plan and DMHC requirements and is delegated for numerous functions that health plans normally perform. These include but are not limited to the following:

  • Concurrent review and utilization management
  • Claims processing
  • Credentialing primary, specialty, and ancillary care providers
  • Risk Adjustment Score (RAF) management for Medicare providers
  • Quality metrics including HEDIS, Medicare Star Measures and preventive health screenings


Specialist and Ancillary Provider Network
Preferred IPA has one of the most comprehensive specialty networks with over 600 contracted specialists covering multiple inpatient facilities in Los Angeles County. They have an equally rich ancillary network to meet the health care needs of our participating physicians and members. Additionally, Preferred IPA is contracted with two of the largest laboratories in the Los Angeles area: Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp in order to provide our physicians and members with easy access for laboratory services.
Urgent Care Center Network and Member Services
Preferred IPA has a comprehensive ER Avoidance Program which includes a network of urgent care centers (UCC). Our providers get training and routine updates regarding their members ER utilizations. We have a dedicated Member Service’s Department that can help with avoidable ER visits. Our members receive information educating them how to access the nurse advice lines and the nearest urgent care center. Our Member Services Department can also assist members in making appointments with primary care physicians as well as informing them about the available UCC network. In addition, Preferred IPA receives daily ER Admissions reports from several hospitals in order to obtain real time access to ER data. Preferred IPA calls its providers with daily ER reports to ensure their patients receive appropriate follow-up care after visiting the ER. The ER avoidance program also includes continuous monitoring and expansion of Preferred IPA’s urgent care network. Currently, Preferred IPA has over 30 UCC sites, several after-hours clinics, and a Minute Clinic contract. Preferred IPA’s network encompasses the greater part of LA County including: San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, Glendale, Central LA, East LA, West LA and South L.A., Hawthorne, Inglewood, Long Beach, Paramount, Torrance and the San Gabriel Valley.
